Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was essentially to care for his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind among the lone tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day upon day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is check here a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a few more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
